Mr. Muhammad Tahir Lakhani is the Managing Director and Chairman of Dubai Trading Agency DTA LLC, Dubai. He is basically a British citizen. He is a famous and successful entrepreneur and a global leader in the ship recycling business. He was born on April 27, 1962, and his origin is Karachi, Pakistan. He comes from an esteemed family.
He was a sportsperson by heart since his early days. He even played tennis and represented his nation on an international level. He represented his country in sports by playing tennis in Junior Wimbledon.
Until 2019, Mr. Tahir Lakhani was the Vice Chairman of the UAE Shipping Association and represented the UAE with his position. He described the UAE as the top national and global logistics and maritime trading hub. Dubai’s first Green Recycling Conference was held by him in association with Tradewinds, which is the worldwide leader as a naval publication.
Mr. Tahir Lakhani has business in his DNA as he also comes from a business family. From the pithead, he learned the trade and chose to start the ship recycling business. He started his career by working for 12 hours at a ship recycling yard owned by his family friend. He used to work on vessels in his early 20s. He monitored and supervised the transfer of steel plates for the first three years. The plates were removed from vessels and sold to the traders on-site.
In 1985, Mr. Muhammad Tahir Lakhani moved to Dubai to start his business for having a significant involvement and keen interest in the ship recycling industry in his country. Mr. Lakhani was the one and only vessels’ cash buyer back then. He used to buy ships and sell them for removal in the recycling yards in the UAE.
For acquiring three former Adriatic Tankers of VLCC, he closed the biggest deal for ship demolition in 1996 in international waters and delivered them to Pakistani breakers.
Mr. Tahir Lakhani emerged as the leading businessman in 1997, and he was well regarded as the top “cash buyer” worldwide dealing in more than 100 vessels every year. He achieved British citizenship in 2009, but he never left Dubai to expand in volume and scale.
He moved to the UK just for the expansion of his business with his family in 1999. Eventually, he thought of giving his company a global platform and promoted his trade across the world. Mr. Lakhani has always done something great for the shipping industry and encouraged Dubai on an international scale. He became the leading businessman in the shipping industry across the world due to his endeavors.
